The week ahead: Historical walking tour, Mother's Day 5K, handbell concert

The First State Ringers bell choir will perform Saturday at the Newark Free Library.

Recycling and shredding event: May 13, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., at The Independence School, 1300 Paper Mill Road. Delawareans can drop off their household hazardous waste and electronic goods for recycling. Each person can also bring up to two boxes of documents to be shredded on-site. Held rain or shine.

Walking tour: May 13, 10 a.m., at the corner of Orchard Road and Kent Way. Historian Jim Jones will lead a walking tour focusing on the development of Newark's west side between Delaware Avenue and Park Place. The walk is family-friendly, ADA accessible, and covers roughly one-half mile. This rain-or-shine event is free and open to the public. Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather.
