Let there be light!

As the temperatures drop, we’re gearing up for the arrival of our favorite holidays. Kicking us off is Diwali, a five-day Hindu celebration that's often called the Festival of Lights. It may be India's biggest holiday, but it's celebrated across the world, so if you find yourself at one of these beautiful festivities, don't show up empty-handed. We hunted around for some of the best Diwali gifts to offer your gracious host—no matter which of the five celebratory days you show up to.

We turned to Pottery Barn's chief design officer, Monica Bhargava, for some insight on the best Diwali gifts and what the holiday means to her. She says, "Diwali is a very special holiday to me, one that I’ve celebrated ever since I was a child and look forward to every year. Diwali is all about celebrating with kids, family, and friends. It seems as if every day is a different gathering with close friends who love the spirit of Diwali. We have plenty of get togethers planned with others, where everyone dances, shares delicious food, wears traditional clothes, and connects back with culture."

The first of the five days is mostly prep for the rest of the festivities. People often and display their best gold wares and favorite kitchen utensils to usher in good fortune. The second day is all about decorations, the typical and most popular of which are clay lamps (where Diwali gets its name). Then, the main and biggest Diwali celebration occurs on the third day when families come together in prayer.

Later that day, the elaborate feasts (and sometimes fireworks) take center stage. Following that is the penultimate day that marks the Hindu new year and is often commemorated with gift exchanges. Lastly, the fifth day is specifically for siblings. Traditionally, adult brothers pay their sisters a visit with small gifts in tow. The celebration finishes off with another delicious meal, courtesy of the sisters.

So whether you’re on your way to your first Festival of Lights celebration or your 100th, snag one of our thoughtful gift ideas below. Your host will surely appreciate the gesture!

It's not Diwali without an abundance of light, especially candlelight. We love these elegant handcrafted metal votives that add the most effortlessly glamorous touch to typically colorful Diwali tables.

"Diwali is a celebration of light, and I love to give the gift of light to our friends and family. This year, the Diwali tealight candleholders were my go to gift, they were inspired by the traditional diya oil lamps we burn during the holidays,"Bhargava adds.

Like many holidays, Diwali places a huge importance on the feast, so outfitting the dining table in elegant decor is a must. One accessory that often gets overlooked is the napkin ring, which isn't exactly necessary but makes all the difference.

We're not huge believers in expensive napkins because let's face it, they end up covered in stains. That said, a beautifully set table complete with paper napkins won't work. Enter this set of faux linen alternatives that come in an array of colors and get the job done.

When it comes to decorating for the five-day Festival of Lights, there is no such thing as too many candles. If you're looking to add a pop of on-theme color to your tablescape, opt for this set of four fuchsia and gold votives.

As we said, food is a big part of Diwali celebrations, so bringing the host a few extra serving dishes is always a good idea. This colorful set by chef Yotam Ottolenghi is one of our favorites because it's colorful and delicate, but completely safe in the dishwasher and microwave.

Almost as important as the candles are flowers. In fact, so much of Diwali's colors come from the flowers around the table and decorating the home. But fresh floral decorations can get a little tricky, especially when there are lots of people coming and going. That's why we're swiping this faux garland that looks incredibly real—no matter how closely you examine it. The best part? The host can use it every year!

As is the case with many fall and winter holidays, gifts are at the center of Diwali. One of the most traditional and appreciated is dried fruit and nuts.

Go the extra mile and pick up a set of three small serving dishes in which the host can serve the first half of your delicious gift. Plus, such a set comes in handy long after the festivities end.

Most Diwali feasts are served family-style, so gifting your host a beautifully rustic set of serving utensils will go a long way. Whether you're reaching for a second helping of gulab jamun or kheer, you'll scoop up plenty of delicious fare with these servers.

Dessert is often served with herbal tea, so offering your host an elegant ceramic teapot is a good move. Caraway's recently debuted whistling tea kettle is one of our favorites. It's made with non-toxic materials, features a single-tone whistle call when boiling that doesn't nearly deafen you, and works on all stovetops. Not to mention, it's on sale now!

Fresh flowers may make for difficult decorations, but they're always much-welcomed gifts, especially when in the form of a blooming bouquet. This one from The Bouqs Co. is made mostly of typical Diwali flowers and bright marigolds.

Diwali 2022 starts on October 24th and goes until October 28th.

Diwali is also known as the Festival of Lights. It is a five-day celebration and each day brings with it different ceremonies. Though each community celebrates differently, the main celebratory element is the triumph of good over evil.
